All professionals enter the field of special education with a singular goal of helping individuals achieve optimal learning outcomes. However, the underlying philosophies and approaches used to reach this goal will vary based upon training and backgrounds. Through the years, philosophies grow and change which should provide us all with an opportunity to reflect on our practices. However, with rampant messaging on social media, this creates a world where some philosophies are defined as inherently “good” or “bad”. This presentation will outline common factors associated with both the Neurodiversity Movement and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). The core principles of the neurodiversity affirming practices will be explored with examples of how professionals with various philosophies can ensure adherence to these principles.
Participants will:
- Describe a minimum of three common elements associated with the neurodiversity movement
- State how these common elements associated with Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) overlap with the neurodiversity movement
- Identify how both elements of neurodiversity and ABA can align with neuroaffirming approaches
