Do you have learners with emerging speech, or perhaps their speech can only be understood by familiar people? Do you want to know how to expand this speech to be a form of functional communication? During this presentation, there will be a brief description of how to identify the learner's existing quality, quantity, and function of speech. Strategies to develop the speech of learners who have never used a picture-based system will be described, along with strategies for learners who may be transitioning to speech from PECS® or an SGD. Participants will have the opportunity to apply these strategies in an activity.

Identify 3 functional targets for speech and language improvement based upon skills first assessment

  • Describe at least 2 strategies that promote improved quality and functions of speech
  • Discuss and practice identification of strategies for successfully increasing speech and language skills
