Requesting is one of many important functional communication skills. There is a wealth of literature supporting the rationale for starting with teaching requesting skills to people with Complex Communication Needs. These individuals also need assistance from speech therapist/language pathologists and other team members to learn additional communication skills involved in conversational exchanges. In this presentation, teaching communicative opportunities including responding to questions, filling in the blanks and beginning conversational interactions are viewed from two perspectives: behavior analysis and speech language pathology. Additionally, there are extensive examples that address expanding language within academic routines, using past tense, as well as considerations when teaching these skills to AAC users.
Learner Objectives:
- Describe the rationale for initially teaching requesting skills to communicators
- Define Skinner’s intraverbal in terms of AAC implementation
- Refine and expand social communication lessons for AAC users
